Winter Layering 101 – w/ a Touch of the 90’s

It has to be clear at this point, one of my many obsessions is connecting somehow with my childhood . . .  the 90’s, which is currently all the rage. After almost 4 months of hunting I finally got my hands on a pair of Shell Toes . . .  or the official name Superstar Originals from Adidas, I don’t know anyone who actually calls them that but in elementary school everyone had a pair. I really wanted the White pair with Navy Stripes but missed my chance to pre-order them on Urban Outfitters. I searched for them almost everyday and to my luck Adidas also did a relaunch, they sold out everywhere but Urban Outfitters, for the win, had them in the White with Black Stripes, which is close enough when you’ve looking for months. I also ordered a pair of them in ALL WHITE, which have been on their way since forever thanks to the multiple snow storm. Long story short . . . I LOVE THEM !

So on to what this post is really ‘post’ to be about,  pun intended. With Layering, anything really goes. You could either layer in a more formal way or layer more casually. This particular look is more on the casual side. You usually start with a basic top, something that either goes on top, or even under: like a button down, and another piece, that is usually outerwear : like a denim + leather jacket, blazer or a cardigan, depending on what you’re second layer was. To add more layers without being to bulky, scarves : circle scarves & patterned+printed scarves, as well as vests : puffed vests + cardigan vests + vest jackets. Just be careful not to over layer, so your not stuffed and can’t move. Look wise, there’s no such thing is “over layering”, especially if you mix long and short pieces, it all balances out.

I wore this outfit the day before another snow storm was approaching and just after another storm ended and somehow thought it was okay to wear ankle pants, they are actually Girlfriend jeans from H & M, which I’ll talk all about in a post to come. I have a thing for ankle or cuffed pants. If I am wearing regular pants I usually cuff them and I also hate when my socks show, so I usually do a trade off, no socks or ankles out with socks. Well, too make up for the exposed ankles I made sure I had more than enough layers on so that I wasn’t too cold. I didn’t spend much time outside so I was fine. My parka/jacket had lining so I probably would have been fine with it alone, but I decided to add my long cardigan, to mix in the short and long pieces, which is also very warm with long sleeves. To be even more sure I added  my circle scarf to the mix, in the pictures you could see I added a beanie, but I completely forgot about wearing it. Last but not least, very minimal on the accessories, my normal pearl earrings, my MK watch and my fav Ray Ban sunnies, even without the sun, you can’t go wrong with sunglasses.
